Feature Shelter Gerbil: George

George the gerbilI try to feature a shelter or rescue gerbil on the Twin Squeaks Blog as often as I can. Several of my gerbils have been either rescues or shelter gerbils, and so this is a cause very close to my heart.

Today's featured shelter gerbil is George. If you live near Abingdon, Maryland, maybe you can help George find a home.

George is a very lovely pied agouti male gerbil who is currently with one of the caregivers at Lunas House, a rescue organization for animals.

George is 1.5-years old and, according to Lunas House, will sit still in your hand and let you pet him. :)

Please visit George's Petfinder page for more information. If you are interested in adopting George, please contact Lunas House or fill out an online application.

If you adopt George, I'd love to hear about how things go in his new home. :)

Introducing Marco & Polo!

Kylee with Marco and Polo the gerbilsTonight, I'd like to introduce you to Marco and Polo, the newest gerbils here at Twin Squeaks.

They are brothers from the same litter, and both came from Black Wolf Clan Gerbils.

I adopted them while I was at the 2008 New England Gerbil Show.

Marco is a Light Dark-Eyed Honey, and Polo is a Honey Cream. (Polo is the lighter-colored of the two.)

Marco and Polo are two of the friendliest, tamest gerbils I've ever known. Both are happy to hop into my hand, and I can sit on the couch and let both of them run around on my lap without worrying that either will run away.

The boys are almost three months old now and are starting to look more grown up, but they still have lots of pup enthusiasm and energy. And Polo is an excellent sand bather. He loves to roll in chinchilla sand. :)

Marco and Polo the gerbilsThey're just super friendly. And did I mention adorable, too??? :)

Featured Shelter Gerbil: Gillyweed

UPDATE: Gilly has been adopted! We hope that he is very happy in his new home!

Gillyweed the gerbilThis is Gillyweed, this week’s featured shelter gerbil. Gillyweed and several other rodents were going to be put to sleep, but then they were rescued by the Rabbit & Small Animal Rescue in Westland, Michigan.

Gillyweed is a very handsome red fox who doesn’t ever bite, according to the Rabbit & Small Animal Rescue. He is very active and friendly. The rescue recommends that he go to a home without small children, but teens and adults would both make good owners for Gilly.

You can learn more about Gilly, see more photos of him, and even watch a video of Gilly on on his Petfinder page.

Congratulations, Herman!

Herman the gerbil with his ribbonI’ve been very slow to update the Twin Squeaks site over the past couple of months, because it’s been such a busy time! But I do have plenty of news to report, which I'll try to do over the next few days in a series of blog posts.

First, our gerbil Herman received 1st Place in the White Belly class at the 2008 New England Gerbil Show.

Herman went on to compete for Best In Show. The final decision came down to Herman and one other gorgeous gerbil named Adam from Garden of Eden Gerbils.

Adam beat Herman for Best In Show, but Herman had still accumulated enough show points at the 2007 New England Show, 2007 Midwest Show, and 2008 New England Show to walk away with an American Gerbil Society Championship.

Herman the gerbilWhen a gerbil earns enough show points to receive a Championship, he or she also retires from competing in gerbil shows, so Herman has reached the highest level a gerbil can achieve in the gerbil show ring, and he can now enjoy his retirement. :)

I’ve included a photo below of three of the gerbils who earned their Championships that day. From left to right in the photo are:

Kaden, who was Herman’s mate and is the mother of Herman’s son Sebastian. Kaden is pictured with her breeder, Jo Kelley of Black Wolf Clan Gerbils.

Herman (with me). Herman and Kaden were the first mated pair in American Gerbil Society history to both earn Championships. Even more special is that they both got their Championships on the same day.

Adam who is pictured with his proud owner Kelly Johnson of Garden Of Eden Gerbils. Adam also won Best In Show.

Featured Shelter Gerbil: Cuddles

Cuddles the gerbilToday’s featured shelter gerbil is Cuddles, a lovely little dark-eyed honey gerbil (like our gerbil Herman).

Cuddles was a classroom pet and is used to children. He no longer has a home, though, and is waiting at the Sheboygan County Humane Society in Wisconsin to find a new, loving home.

If live in the Sheboygan County area and can help little Cuddles find a home, please visit Cuddles’ Petfinder page for information about how you can adopt him.

UPDATE: 6/29/08 - Cuddles is still looking for a home. If you can help him out, please visit his Petfinder page to learn how to adopt him.

UPDATE: Cuddles is still looking for a home as of January 3rd, 2009. Please, if you can help this little guy find a home, visit his Petfinder page and contact the Sheboygan County Humane Society. It would be wonderful if Cuddles could find a home in 2009.

Polo Runs To My Shoulder

I had to share this video of Polo. He’s one of the new gerbils who came home with me from the 2008 New England Gerbil Show. Polo and his brother Marco are both very tame and friendly. They came from Black Wolf Clan Gerbils in Missouri.

In the video below, you can see how tame Polo is. :)
