Hallie & Cassie Are Still Getting To Know Each Other

Hallie the gerbil
Cassie the gerbil
We let Hallie and Cassie have some time together with the divider removed today, but Hallie still wasn’t ready to accept Cassie yet. Hallie did let Cassie groom her once, but other than that, things were still awfully rough today. Cassie was a little less frightened during the introduction attempt, but Hallie was still as aggressive as last time.

So the girls have the divider back in the tank, and we’ll give them a little more time. They just aren’t quite ready yet. In the meantime, I’m giving them some time outside the tank and spoiling them. (You can see me spending time with each of them to the right.)

It makes me appreciate how much easier it is to introduce males, though... Especially an adult male to a pup. Gobo and Smurf paired up after only a week, and it was such a peaceful, happy introduction. Females are always more difficult, but I’m anxious for Hallie and Cassie to be friends.

:( How sad they're not quite ready to be friends yet! Hope they warm up to the idea soon. I adopted a four-month-old female gerbil as a friend for my just-over-a-year female gerbil, and what I did was gradual but they get along fine!
I had two small tanks, one gerbil and each tank, and I would switch them to each other's tank, every morning and evening. Gradually they got the smell of each other and then I would hold them and let them sniff each other; first from a distance, then up close (all with gloves, of course). Then gradually I'd let them together into a tank. They got into a few tussles at first but we got to where we let them together all day but put them is seperate cages at night when we couldn't be watching them. Then I got them a brand new 20 gallon tank and let them spend their first night together! They've lived together ever since!
So that's my story. I call it the "Switch Cage Method." :)

I'm sorry they aren't getting along yet. I'm having the same problems with my two male gerbils. One is extremely skiddish (and has been since he was "mouthed" by our family dog-- Healthwise he's fine though) and the other is aggressive and overpowering. I really don't know what to do except keep trying every few weeks. Anyway, I hope that it works out between Hallie and Cassie. Good luck. =)
