Twin Squeaks Gerbils

Gerbil Snowflakes!

Have you ever made paper snowflakes? Did you know that your gerbils can make paper snowflakes, too? Last year, our friends at the NGS (National Gerbil Society) showed us how to make gerbil snowflakes.

1. Start with a sheet of plain white paper. It should have no ink on it, and it should be plain, not slick or colored. Colors, ink, and dyes can hurt gerbils. Fold the sheet of paper in half by folding the left edge to line up with the right edge, as in the photo to the left.

paper folding2. Fold the paper in half again. This time, fold the top edge down to meet the bottom edge, as in the photo to the left.

paper folding3. Finally, fold the left edge of the paper over to the right edge of the paper. Your paper should look like the one in the photo to the left.

Sam makes a snowflake4. Find your artistic gerbils. Give them the folded sheet of paper and let them start chewing on it. Let them chew until you think they have created something neat. Then remove the paper from the gerbils' tank.

gerbil snowflake5. Carefully unfold your gerbils' artwork. It might unfold into one giant snowflake, or it might unfold into a few small snowflakes. Hang your gerbils' artwork on the fridge or next to the gerbil tank.

Samantha and Suzie weren't the only artists at Twin Squeaks. Pippi and Ani made a gerbil snowflake, too. You can see it below. We think their gerbil snowflake looks like a gerbil face!
