Is it the right pet for me? Are they pretty easy to take care of? Do they bite hard and/or often?

From,

Laura

Dear Laura,

Gerbils make great pets, but you do need to promise to take care of them for the rest of their lives before you adopt gerbils.

You will need to clean their tank by scooping out their old bedding and pouring new bedding into their tank. Most people clean their gerbils’ tanks once every two weeks.

You will also need to give them a small handful of food each day and check their water bottle every day. You should also give them a toilet paper tube or other cardboard to chew every day. Gerbils love to shred cardboard into tiny pieces!

You should also plan to spend some time playing with your gerbils every day. You might do this by putting your hand in their tank and letting them crawl on it, or by giving them hand-fed treats (sunflower seeds, Puffed Kashi cereal, plain Cheerios, etc.), or by taking them out of the tank to play in a bathtub or other safe area.

Most gerbils do not sit still in your hands. Instead, they will want to crawl from one hand to the other. Gerbils are very busy and very curious, and they don’t sit still for long. :)

Most gerbils do not bite. Especially if you handle them the right way.

I hope that helps! It is not runny, and she is happy and playful. I wondered if she might be allergic to the aspen bedding, or if this is her coloring as she is getting older. She is almost 2 months old. Her sister, Petal, is a burmese and is not having any problems with her nose.

Thanks for your help!

From,

Claire

P.S. Do you have any tips for taking pictures of my gerbils?

Hi Claire!

It sounds like Daffodil may be allergic to her bedding. You might try putting Daffodil and Petal on a different type of bedding, such as corncob (found in the bird aisle of the pet store). You could also try putting them on plain, shredded paper towels (you will need a lot), but you will need to clean their tank more often if you use paper towels instead of bedding.

Try putting them on a different type of bedding, and see if Daffodil’s nose improves.

Most of the time, if a gerbil’s nose gets red, switching to a different type of bedding will fix the problem. :)

If it doesn’t, you may need to take Daffodil to the vet. One of the other gerbils at Twin Squeaks, Marco had a red nose when he first came to live here. His problem was not an allergy. It was an infection. The vet gave him some antibiotics, and his nose cleared up. It worked great, and his nose hasn’s been red since!

You also asked how to take better gerbil photos. We have a set of tips for taking better gerbil photos. I hope the tips help!

Please say hi to Daffodil and Petal from both Herman and me. We hope that Daffodil’s nose is better soon!

From your friend,

Hallie

What Type Of Home Should My Gerbil Live In?

Hi Herman and Hallie!

I’m thinking about getting a gerbil. There is this cage at Petsmart that I would like to get, but I don’t know if it would be okay for two male gerbils.

The cage is in a pack called the Deluxe Gerbil and Hamster Cage kit. It is a wire cage and comes with a bag of gerbil/hamster feed and some toys.

Would a glass fish tank be better. If so, how big?

Also, is Carefresh Colors Confetti Odor Control pet bedding okay for gerbils?

From,

- H.

Hi H.!

Thank you for your letter. You have so many great questions!

Although gerbils can live in either a cage or a glass tank, I prefer a glass tank.

You can give your gerbils a deeper layer of bedding if they live in a tank. (In a cage, the bedding will fall out through the bars if you fill it too high.)

Also, gerbils love to dig and tunnel under the bedding. In a cage, they will kick the bedding out through the bars.

Also, it’s harder for gerbils to escape from a glass tank with a secure lid, so they can stay safer in a glass tank.

You can also give your gerbils lots of fun toys if they live in a glass tank. In the picture to the left, you can see my sister Liza rearranging the bedding in our tank around cardboard boxes to make fun hiding places and tunnels.

In addition to a wheel, you can give your gerbils lots of cardboard boxes to chew (without worrying that they’ll kick little bits of shredded cardboard out onto your floor), and you can give them lots and lots of bedding so they can have fun digging in it!

If you get a fish tank for your gerbils, it should be no smaller than 10 gallons. We really need at least that much space. If you can get a larger tank, your gerbils will enjoy the extra space. :)

Finally, the Carefresh bedding should be okay. Just like people, though, gerbils have different allergies to different things, so if your gerbils get runny noses or have any other problems, you can try a different type of safe bedding, such as aspen or corncob, too.

From your friend,

Hallie

My Gerbil Is Easily Frightened

Dear Herman,

My gerbil Jessica is very nervous. She stands in the corner of her tank and spends half the day trying to jump out.

I know I’ve only had her for a week, but she worries me. She gets along fine with her tankmate Belle (the little sweetheart), so that isn’t a problem. She darts to her house at the slightest noise. She’s almost been hurt when I try to hold her.

Can you help me? Am I just over-reacting because these are my first gerbils and Belle is the calmest gerbil I know?

From,

-G.

P.S. Tell Hallie I said hi!

Dear G.,

Thank you for writing!

Gerbils are like people: Each one has a different personality. So Belle might always be calmer and tamer than Jessica.

The good news is that, even if Jessica is always a little bit nervous, you can do some things to help her feel safer. Also, some of Belle’s calm personality may rub off on Jessica over time.

To help Jessica feel safe, don’t chase her around the tank to pick her up. Since she gets scared easily, it might help to pick her up using a cup. Let her crawl into the cup, and then “spill” her out into your hand. As soon as she starts to act nervous, have her crawl into your other hand and then gently lower her back into her tank. This will help her learn to trust you and know that when she wants to go home, you will take her home, where it is safe.

You can learn more about the cup trick here:

http://homepage.mac.com/kyleekay/tip-of-the-week/tip032603.html

I hope that helps! Just remember to be patient with Jessica. She’s still getting used to her new home. :)

Your pal,

Herman

My Gerbil Won’t Take a Sandbath!

Dear Hallie,

My gerbil buster wont take a sand bath. When he shakes the sand out of the fur on his back, he might start rolling in the sand bath.

A few gerbils never will take sand baths. We have had lots of gerbils here at Twin Squeaks but only one who didn't learn to take sand baths. (His name was Buster, too!)

Most gerbils do like to roll in the sand, though. It just takes them a while to figure it out. Give Buster some time, and he’ll probably figure out what to do. :)

Your friend,
Hallie

Questions Before Adopting First Gerbils

Hi Hallie!

I’m Karmin. I am about to adopt a pair of gerbils, and I’m wondering:

How do you know how old your gerbils are?

Can we visit any vet? How often should our gerbils visit the vet?

How can you tell if a gerbil is allergic to it’s bedding or any other object?

What do I do if a gerbil gets pests?

Please help me! The people at the pet shop can’t answer any of my questions!

From,
Karmin

Hi Karmin!

Thank you for your letter!

I’ll try to answer some of your questions.

If the place you get your gerbils from can’t tell you how old your gerbils are, it can be very hard to know exactly how old they are. Young gerbils are smaller than adult gerbils, but some adult gerbils get very big, and others stay pretty small, so it’s hard to know age based only on size.

Older gerbils have lighter fur, as their coat fades with age. But this, too, is hard to use to tell exactly how old your gerbils are.

Most gerbils are adopted pretty young, so they are probably less than a year old. In fact, most gerbils are about 2-4 months old when they are adopted from pet stores.

If the people you get your gerbils from can’t tell you how old they are, they also probably can’t tell the difference between boy and girl gerbils. You want to be careful to get either two males or two females.

Look here for help telling which gerbils are boys and girls.

You should look for a vet who has treated small animals like gerbils, hamsters, or rats.

You shouldn’t need to take your gerbils to the vet very often. Gerbils don’t need any special shots or anything like that, so you only need to take them to the vet if they are sick or need help.

If a gerbil is allergic to something, you’ll probably see signs. The most common sign is a red, runny, sore nose. If it looks like a gerbil’s nose is bloody, it may be allergic to the bedding.

If you keep your gerbils inside and are careful with any toys, food, and bedding that you give them, they probably won’t get any pests. If they do, you’ll want to call your vet for help treating your gerbils and getting rid of the pests.

You might also want to read some of the pages in the Gerbil Care Guide. It has some tips for choosing the right gerbils, setting up your gerbils’ new home, and more.

Good luck finding and adopting your first gerbils!

Your good friend,
Hallie

How Do I Pick The Right Gerbil?

Hi Herman,

I’m getting a gerbil soon. I want to know how I pick the right gerbil for me. Do I ask if I can hold the gerbils to see which one likes me the most?

Which ways can I pick up my new gerbil?

I also wanted to know if I had to do the split-cage method if I got 2 gerbils at the same time.

From,
Jonah

P.S. I think You guys are really cute!!!

Hi Jonah,

Instead of asking to hold the gerbils, I would ask to put your hand in their tank. See which gerbils are the most curious and interested in your hand. Do any gerbils crawl into your hand when it’s in their tank? Do any try to crawl up your arm? If so, these are friendly gerbils, and they’ll probably win your heart over. :)

You’ll also be able to tell if one of the gerbils in the tank likes to nip your fingers. Try to pick a gerbil who is curious and comes to see or crawl on your hand but who doesn’t nip your fingers.

You should also read How To Select The Right Gerbils in the Gerbil Care Guide. The second half of the article is about how to tell if a gerbil is healthy. Make sure you read that part so you can adopt healthy gerbils. There is also a link at the end of the article to how to tell if a gerbil is a boy or a girl.

You can read How To Pick Up A Gerbil to learn how to safely pick up your gerbils.

You won’t need to use the split-cage method to introduce your gerbils if you get them from the same tank at the same time. As long as your gerbils already know each other and come home with you at the same time, they should get along.

I hope that helps! Good luck!

Your friend,
Herman

Can Gerbils Live In A Home That Has Other Pets?

Dear Herman,

I have two cats, one dog, and a fish. I was thinking of asking for a gerbil for Christmas. Would my gerbils be okay to these animals, or should I wait? My cats are indoor/outdoor and are usually outside, but my dog is inside most of the time, but she does have a VERY GOOD temperament.

Please help me,

Sam

Dear Sam,

I’m glad that you’re thinking about these things before you get your gerbils!

Gerbils can live safely in a home with other pets, but you need to be careful and protect your gerbils from the other animals.

First, make sure that your gerbils live in a safe home that will not tip over, break, or have parts fall off. I suggest a glass fish tank with a screen lid and lid clamps to keep the lid on. (You can find a screen lid and the lid clamps in the reptile aisle of your pet store.)

Don’t get a plastic home or cage with tubes. These are very light and easy for a larger pet like a dog or cat to knock over. Also, the plastic tubes can break or fall off, letting your gerbils escape. This is very dangerous if you have other pets in the house.

Next, make sure that you keep your door shut when you aren’t in the room with your gerbils so that the other pets can’t get to your gerbils.

Finally, when you play with your gerbils, make sure the other pets aren’t in the room and that the door to the room is shut.

If you make sure that your other pets can’t get to your gerbils and that your gerbils can’t escape, your pets should be able to all live peacefully in the same house.

What’s most important is that you are careful to keep them apart and that you have enough time to take care of and play with all of your pets.

From your buddy,
Herman

Why Does My Gerbil Have A Mark On The Side Of Her Nose?

Hi Hallie,

I recently got a female gerbil to go with the other that I already had. The new one is 4 or 5 months old and the older one is a year old. We used the split cage method and then had them together everyday for about 30 minutes. When they finally started to be extremely nice to each other we put them in a new cage together. (The crittertrail pink/crittertrail dazzle combinded with tubes) After a month of putting them together the new gerbil had a black outline on one side of its nose that wasn't there before. Do you know what this could be from?

P.S. I use carefresh bedding and my gerbils don't seem to fight.

Sincerely,
M.

Hi M.!

I’m so excited. You’re the first person who wrote to me! Thank you so much for your letter! :)

You mentioned that your gerbils live in a Crittertrail home. Those have cage bars on them, right? I bet what’s happening is that your gerbil is chewing on the bars of the cage, and they’re either staining her fur or rubbing a little bit of the fur off her nose so that darker skin underneath is showing through? Is she chewing on the bars a lot?

If you think it is chewing on the bars that is causing the marks on the side of her nose, you might want to move your gerbils to a glass fish tank, like my sister Liza and I live in. (You can see a photo of us in our home to the left.)

We have lots of toys in our tank: an exercise wheel, a large wooden toy to play in and chew on (we buried it under the bedding before Kylee took our picture!), a small coconut hut, and a glass jar to dig in. We also get lots of cardboard to chew. We just finished destroying a cardboard box right before our photo was taken! :)

If your gerbils live in a glass tank, make sure they have a screen lid (which you can get in the reptile aisle at the pet store) and a set of lid clamps to hold the lid in place (also found in the reptile aisle of the pet store).

There are some other reasons why we like glass tanks best. You can read about them in the Ideal Gerbil Homes tip.

If you want to move your gerbils to a glass tank but still want your gerbils to have time to play in their Crittertrail cage, they could spend time there while you clean their tank. (Or they could spend some play time inside the Crittertrail each day as out-of-tank time.)

I hope that helps and that your gerbil’s nose gets better soon. Please tell your gerbils hello from both me and my grandpa Herman!

From your friend,
Hallie

Can I Give My Gerbils Cat Litter?

Dear Herman,

I am 10 years old, and I was wondering if it is a good idea to put cat litter in my gerbil’s cage? My aunt has a hamster, and she puts it in there, so is it safe for my gerbils?

Sincerely,

Tyler

Dear Tyler,

Thank you for writing to me! My granddaughter Hallie is going to help me answer your question. :)

We don’t know exactly what type of cat litter your aunt uses, but we would guess that it wouldn’t be very good for your gerbils.

When cats use a litter box, it can smell pretty strong, so usually cat litter has stuff in it to cover up the “cat smell.” A lot of times, the stuff they put in the cat litter can hurt our little gerbil lungs.

It’s best to use a nice, safe bedding for your gerbils. Our favorite type of bedding is corncob bedding, which you get in the bird aisle at the pet store. Other good beddings are Carefresh Ultra or aspen shavings.

Please tell your gerbils hello!

Your friends,

Herman & Hallie

Please Welcome My Granddaughter Hallie!

Hello, everyone!

This is Herman here. I have an important announcement! My granddaughter Hallie recently moved to Twin Squeaks, and my aunt Nellie (who used to answer letters with me) spent a lot of time teaching Hallie everything about answering letters. Hallie is now ready to help me answer your letters!

I'm so excited about working with my granddaughter to answer your gerbil questions! We both look forward to reading your letters, and we’ve made some changes that will make it easier for us to get online and answer your letters, too. :)

Please join me in welcoming Hallie!

Your pal,

Herman the Gerbil

Can Gerbils Live In A Split Cage All The Time?

Hi Nellie!

My sister and I each had two gerbils, two were girls and two were boys and they lived separately.

Now one of each has died and we were wondering if the boy and girl could live in the same cage if it was always a split cage? Or could they get pregnant?

We're worried they're lonely but we aren't allowed to get anymore gerbils. We've spent lots of time with them, but we're still worried.

Thanks,

-S.

Hi S.!

Yes, as long as the split cage you build is sturdy and they can't get around, over, or under the divider, your gerbil and your sister's gerbil should be able to live in a split cage without any trouble. :)

Use a good, sturdy divider, too, so that they can't chew through it.

As long as your gerbils can't get to the other side of the divider, you shouldn't have to worry about the female getting pregnant.

Living in the split cage won't be the same as living together, but I think they will feel safer having another gerbil nearby than living completely alone.

You can find information about building a really good split cage here:

http://www.twinsqueaks.com/split-tank.html

You'll need a parent or other trusted adult to help you build the split tank.

If you can't build a split tank for your gerbils, just keep doing what you've been doing and give your gerbils lots of love and attention. And give them lots of cardboard to chew and an exercise wheel to run in.

Good luck! So I found some at the pet store and bought it. I have a dish to put it in, but they don't take it. All they do is lick it.

I am worried that they don't know how to do it. Do they? I have been putting the dish in their cage for about 5 to 10 minutes every day for about three weeks.

Thank you,

-A.

Hi A.,

Thanks for writing! Not all gerbils will use a dust bath, but most of us will!

It can take us a while to figure out what to do with the sand or dust. Almost all gerbils will first lick or chew on the sand before they roll in it, so that's okay that your gerbils do this. :)

You might try sprinkling a little bit of dust on their backs while they're standing in the bowl. Sometimes, a gerbil will shake to get the sand off his or her back, and that will prompt them to start rolling.

Most gerbils will take a sandbath, but some just don't. Here at Twin Squeaks, we have just one gerbil who doesn't take sand baths. His name is Buster. His tankmate Gobo loves to take sand baths. But Buster just sits in the bowl and looks around.

Try to sprinkle some dust on your gerbils' backs while they're standing in the bowl. That might help. Good luck!

Your pal,
-Nellie

How To Find A Friend For A Male Gerbil

Dear Nellie,

We have had a male gerbil for over a year, and we want to adopt a friend for him.

How do we choose a proper friend? Our gerbil, Nibbles, is a very inquisitive, friendly gerbil who loves to be held and played with.

Do two males live well together?

From,
- E.

Dear E.,

The easiest type of gerbil to introduce to an adult male is a young male gerbil. If you can find an American Gerbil Society breeder who lives close to you, the breeder can help you choose a gerbil that is young and likely to make a good friend for your gerbil. The younger the gerbil, the better the chances that Nibbles will get along with him.

You will also want to do a split-cage introduction, because gerbils won't get along unless you introduce them the right way. If you don't want to build a big split tank yourself, you can also buy a great little split cage from Jo at Black Wolf Clan Gerbils.

Just remember that it is important that Nibbles and your new male gerbil pup are introduced with the split-cage method so that they do not hurt each other.

Good luck! I'm sure that Nibbles will be very happy to have a friend! :)

Your friend,
- Nellie

My New Gerbil Bites

Dear Nellie,

Every time I touch my gerbil, it bites me. Remember that your gerbil is in a new home and probably still feels a little bit scared.

You can find some ideas for taming your gerbil on our Web site. Try the ideas and see which ones work best for your gerbil.

Hand-Tame Your Gerbils — These tips will help your gerbil get used to you.

How To Pick Up A Gerbil — These tips will help you learn how to pick up your gerbil without scaring him or her. If your gerbil continues to bite, try using a plastic cup, as suggested at the end of this tip.

Use Your Bathtub As A Gerbil Playground — If your parents are willing to let you sit in a dry bathtub with your gerbil, this is a good way to let your gerbil have fun and learn to trust you.

Finally, make sure that you don't have any food on your fingers, or your gerbil might try “tasting” your fingers. Also, if your gerbil bites when you try to pick him or her up, just wait. Let your gerbil get comfortable taking treats from your hand. Once your gerbil feels safer with you, you can try again.

I hope one of these tips help! Good luck!

Your friend,

- Nellie

How Can I Help My Gerbil Get Used To Her New Home?

Dear Nellie,

Last week I found a gerbil that was being given away because the little girl no longer wanted to take care of her, and her cat was always attacking the cage. I have given her a week of privacy now so that she could get used to being here, but she just stays in her little house.

Is it ok for me to take her out and cuddle her so that she can see that I love her? It is really hard to see what her favourite foods are because I never see her.

Can you give me some advice please?
Her name is Princess, we thought we should keep it because she is so pretty.

Thank you,

- TJ

Hello TJ!

It's great that you've given a loving home to Princess! I'm sure she'll be very happy with you!

It will be easier for Princess to see that you love her if you are patient with her. You can also show her how much you like her by offering her little gifts, such as toilet paper tubes to chew or an occasional treat. You might also try pouring some of her food into your hand and then setting your hand on the floor of the tank so that she can come over and eat from your hand.

Does she have an exercise wheel? If not, try to give her a wheel. This will probably get her out of her house and more active. :)

Once she gets a little bit more used to her home, you might try sitting in the bathtub (no water) while you let Princess explore the tub and crawl on your legs. This helps make many gerbils more tame. You can read more about it in our Use Your Bathtub As A Gerbil Playground tip.

Just remember to be patient with Princess. She is still getting to know you and her new home, but if you are patient, she should learn how much you love her. :)

Your friend,

- Nellie

My Gerbils Are Noisy!

Hello Nellie and Herman,

My gerbils Tinker and Belle are always keeping me up at night. I read the one message, and I have tried giving them toilet paper at night, but it still doesn't work. What they do is chew it really fast and then start scratching at the sides. It's so annoying! Please tell me what I can do!

Oh, and what kind of gerbil are you, Nellie? I think you're adorable with all the colours. You're adorable, too, Herman.

Also, where did you get the spiral toy in some of your pictures?

From,
S.

Hi S.!

Thank you for your letter! Sorry that I didn't have a chance to write sooner. We were very busy, because we went to the American Gerbil Society's Midwest Gerbil Show last month. It was a lot of fun! :)

Usually giving your gerbils something quiet like plain white toilet paper or tissue will keep them busy, quietly shredding it while you fall asleep. You could try giving them a little bit more so that it takes them longer to finish it.

You could also wait until just before you go to bed each night to feed your gerbils. That way, instead of digging against the sides of the tank, they will be busy munching on snacks while you fall asleep.

Also, if you play with your gerbils after supper, they will hopefully be awake in the evening and ready to sleep at night. (Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn't, but it's something you can try.)

Finally, if your gerbils are keeping you up at night and nothing else works, you should consider moving your gerbils out of your room, at least at night, so that you can get a good night's sleep. Is there another room in your house that would be safe to put your gerbils?

Thank you for asking what color I am! I am a Spotted Slate. (Slate is a very dark gray color.) My nephew Herman is a Dark-Eyed Honey.

A very good friend sent the spiral toy as a gift a long time ago. We like it a lot, but we haven't seen one at any pet stores here! It was a very nice gift. We want to say thank you to Nancy for the great spiral toy!!

I hope your gerbils find something quiet to do at night so that they don't keep you up. Good luck!

Your friend,

- Nellie

One Gerbil Isn't As Active As The Other

Hi Nellie and Herman!!

I just got my two gerbils today. Their names are Olly and George. We adopted them from a local pet store. Olly is alert and active like a normal gerbil should be but George is sort of lazy and a little chubby. Is there a way to get him moving and active like Olly? Please help!!

From,
-V.

Hi V.,

Thanks for writing! Usually when you adopt a pair of gerbils, you want to choose ones that are active, because it's a good sign that they're healthy. But it's also true that each gerbil has his own personality. It might just be that Olly is naturally more active than George.

There are some things you can do, though, to get George a little bit more excited and active. First, make sure that you give your new boys lots of cardboard tubes, cardboard boxes, and chew blocks. These things should be interesting and exciting for both Olly and George. You can also give them brown paper lunch sacks to run in, dig inside of, and chew. That will get George moving around a bit, too!

If you haven't already given Olly and George an exercise wheel, you might try that, too. Not all gerbils like to run in a wheel, but most do, and that could be a great way for George to stay active and fit.

Good luck with Olly and George! Tell them that we said hello!

From your friends,
-Nellie & Herman

How Much Do Gerbils Cost?

Hey Nellie & Herman!

I was thinking about getting a gerbil. How much do they cost? I have looked and looked online everywhere and I can't find anything.

From,
-L.

Hi L.!

Thanks for your letter! The cost of gerbils vary a little bit, but you'll find gerbils in most pet shops for about $7 to $10. When you adopt from a gerbil breeder, you can usually get gerbils even cheaper. Common prices are about $6 or $7 for one gerbil or $10 for a pair of gerbils. Finally, check with your local pet shelter or with Petfinder. Often, gerbils at shelters have very affordable adoption fees. Hope is one of the sweetest gerbils at Twin Squeaks, and she came from a shelter. Her adoption cost less than $5.

Here's a great tip to save money when you adopt your first pair of gerbils: Don't buy one of those expensive plastic habitats with the tubes. They cost a lot of money and are easy for gerbils to escape from. It's much cheaper to buy a glass tank and a lid. It's also easier to tame us when we live in a tank, and most gerbils are actually happier in a tank than in a small, cramped plastic habitat.

If you decide to adopt gerbils, good luck, and we hope you find the perfect gerbils for your home!

Your friends,
-Nellie & Herman

Ideas For Gerbil Toys and How To Keep Gerbils Quiet At Night

Hello Herman!

My two gerbils, Coda and Whisper, live in a 10-gallon aquarium, but they don't have many things to do. They have a wheel, but that doesn't keep them busy enough.

What gerbil toys or random household objects can I put in their cage to help them have more fun?

Also, at night, they are very noisy and wake me up all the time. Any solutions for that?

Thank you very much, Herman!

Love,
-S.

Hello S.!

Thanks for writing! It's great that you are such a nice person and want to make sure that your gerbils are happy and having fun! They are very lucky to have you!!

Of course, I bet you know all about toilet paper tubes. These are our favorite toys! You can even make a special gerbil present using a toilet paper tube. This will keep your gerbils busy for a while as they try to get to the treats inside the tube!

Last fall, we had a Tip Of The Month about Two Simple Gerbil Toys. One is a wooden bird ladder and the other is a plain brown paper lunch sack. You won't believe how much fun we have digging and jumping on and chewing apart a paper bag!

We also really like to chew apart plain white, uncoated paper plates. You can fold them in half like a little tent or roll them up like a tube. Either way, your gerbils will have fun playing with and chewing up a paper plate. Small boxes are good, too. For example, the little cardboard boxes that breakfast bars or Pop Tarts come in are just about the perfect size to put in a gerbil tank. We gerbils can use them as hiding places, nesting boxes, or another cardboard toy to chew!

We also have a lot of fun with small glass jars. Just make sure that you rinse the jar out with hot water and let it dry all of the way before you put it in the tank. Then we can crawl in and out of the jar, dig inside the jar, and really have a lot of fun! You'll need to take the jar out and rinse it really well every day, because we gerbils also like to use glass jars as toilets! As long as you clean it out every day, it can be a very fun toy! (If your gerbils start banging the jar into the side of the tank at night, just make sure you take the jar out so that your gerbils don't keep you awake!)

Have you let your gerbils take a sandbath yet? This is a lot of fun! It might take your gerbils a little while to figure it out, but once they do, they'll love rolling in the sand!

If you have extra time (and possibly someone to help?), you might even want to make your own gerbil furniture. This is a really great family activity!

I'm also so glad you asked about what to do when your gerbils are noisy at night! We've had this same problem at Twin Squeaks. Kylee used to get upset with me when I made too much noise and kept her awake at night. Now, she does several things that help me stay quiet at night while still having fun. First, if my exercise wheel squeaks, she puts a bit of olive oil on the wheel. If I still make too much noise in my wheel, she sometimes takes the wheel out until the morning. But I don't get bored when my wheel goes away, because she gives me a big handful of plain white toilet paper sheets. These are so much fun to stuff in my mouth and carry around the tank and then rip into tiny shreds for a soft, fluffy nest! I don't make nearly as much noise chewing on toilet paper sheets as I do when I chew on cardboard tubes. Also, by the time I get done shredding the toilet paper sheets, I usually have a really nice, soft, fluffy nest, and there's nothing that sounds better after all of my hard work than to curl up and take a nap in my new fluffy bed of toilet paper sheets! You should try giving your gerbils about 10 sheets of toilet paper right before you go to bed. You&#39'll be amazed how much fun they have and how nice and quiet they are while you fall asleep! :)

Tell Coda and Whisper “hi” and give them each a treat for me!

Your very good pal,
Herman

Can Two Female Gerbils Who Are Different Sizes Live Together?

Hey Nellie,

I have two female gerbils, and one of them is younger than the other. Is it OK if I keep them in the same cage?

From,
-S.

Hi S.,

You asked a great question! The answer is that it depends. Do the two gerbils already live together now, or do they live in different cages?

If they already live together, they should be OK together, even though they aren't the same size. But if they do not already live together, you cannot put them in the same cage unless you use the Split-Cage Method to help them meet each other.

For a pair of female gerbils, this takes a couple of weeks in the split cage, and you must switch them from side to side a few times every day for it to work. It is usually harder to help two female gerbils get along than it is to help two male gerbils get along, but usually (but not always), it can be done.

If you decide that you want your two gerbils to live together, you should make sure that your mom or dad reads the Split Cage tips on our site and that they will help you. You will need an adult's help to use the split-cage method.

Good luck with both of your gerbils, whatever you decide to do (leave them separate or introduce them). Tell both of them that Nellie says “Hi!” :)

From your pal,
-Nellie

My Gerbil & My Sister's Gerbil Bite Each Other

Hi Nellie & Herman,

My name is L., and I have a gerbil called Elmo. My sister has a female gerbil called Tizzy, and her cage is in a box. i put Elmo in the box but they always seem to bite each other. Does this mean they are kissing or fighting?

From,
-L.

Hi L.,

We're so glad that you wrote! Your gerbil and your sister's gerbil are fighting. Gerbils are very protective of themselves and of other gerbils that they know. This means that if they see a gerbil who is a stranger, they will fight. Because your gerbil and your sister's gerbil have not been living together, they don't know each other, and they will chase and bite each other if you put them together.

We understand that you want Elmo and Tizzy to be able to play together, but they don't know each other and can hurt each other very badly. Instead of letting them play together, it would be a better idea for you to spend lots of time with Elmo and for your sister to spend lots of her time with Tizzy.

We hope this helps! Please tell Elmo and Tizzy hello from both of us!

Your friends,
-Nellie & Herman

Help Naming A Gerbil

Dear Herman,

I have not yet thought of a name for my new gerbil, though my sister has been calling her “Tinka.” Do you have any suggestions? I'm not so sure about the name my sister has given her.

From,
-S.

Dear S.,

Do you have any favorite books, movies, or TV shows? Those are great places to find ideas for gerbil names! For example, another gerbil here at Twin Squeaks (Pippi) was named after Pippi Longstocking, and one of the first gerbils at Twin Squeaks was Ramona, who was named after Beverly Cleary's character Ramona Quimby. The youngest gerbil at Twin Squeaks is Gobo, who is named after Gobo from Fraggle Rock.

You could also give your gerbil a name that reminds you of where you adopted her. For example, our friend Jo has gerbils named Dallas and Chicago. You could name your gerbil after the street of the shop where you found her.

Another idea is to look at the color of her fur and think about what the color or type of fur reminds you of. This could give you names like Butterscotch, Bunny, Night, Oreo, Golden, Fudge, or Cotton.

You can also watch how your gerbil acts and name her after something she likes to do. Popular gerbil names include Digger, Peek, Thumper, Jumper, Chewy, and Dasher.

I hope one of those ideas helps you find the perfect name for your newest family member. Tell her that Herman says hello!

Your good buddy,
Herman

My Gerbil Won't Crawl Down Her Plastic Tubes

Dear Herman,

I got a new gerbil yesterday. . . When I brought her home to her new cage I let her do her share of exploring and I just sat back and watched without interfering so she could get used to her habitat, but I noticed she was having troubles learning to climb up some of the steep tunnels in her cage and this seemed understandable because she had no tunnels in her cage at the pet shop so I figured she would learn on her own.

She learned how to climb up one of the tunnels but was afraid to come back down so I opened the cage and gently gave her a little “tap” down the tunnel and she was going up and down gladly after that. The other steep tunnel I had to help her get up to leads to a running wheel, which she seemed very happy to find. . . She has now learned how to get down but often stays up there for hours until I get her down myself. I have noticed that she just lays on her stomach when she is up there to leave her territorial scent, but she does not come down though she knows how.

Also she runs away from me when I try to catch her and I have not yet seen her drink from either of her water bottles. Is it something that I am doing wrong or does she just need more time to adjust?

From,
-S.

Dear S.,

Thanks for writing, and congrats on your new gerbil!

If she knows how to get down, she's probably staying up there because she likes it there. In fact, if it's an area that is hard for you to get to, she may have decided that it's a nice, safe place to rest. Is she using that area to sleep?

As she gets older, she'll probably start chewing on things more. Make sure that she doesn't start chewing through the plastic tubes in her habitat. If she does, you'll need to move her into something escape-proof, such as a glass tank with a screen lid. (It's easier to tame gerbils in a glass tank, too, because we can't run up a tube every time you put your hand in the tank. We get used to your hands quicker that way.)

We gerbils don't drink very much water, so your gerbil is probably drinking from her water bottle when you aren't looking. Does it look like some of the water has disappeared?

If you think that she doesn't know how to use the water bottle, try to tap the end of the water bottle when your gerbil is nearby. Then hold your finger close to her nose so that she can see that you have a little drop of water on your finger... Then slowly move your finger back toward the water bottle and tap the end of it again. You can also rub a little bit of water on the side of the habitat, right under and next to the water bottle. This should help your gerbil explore the area, looking for more water. She should figure out how to use the water bottle pretty quickly.

Good luck! I hope that you and your new gerbil have lots of fun together! Tell her hi for me!

Your pal,
Herman

Do Gerbils Like Cereal Boxes

Dear Nellie and Herman,

Do gerbils like cereal boxes as little hideouts?

From,
-M.

Dear M.

Thank you for your letter!
